St Georgians

The St Georgians (formerly known as The Old Girls Union) was formed in 1929, with a twofold purpose – keeping former students in touch, and raising funds for the school. Currently there are just over 500 members. The cost of Life Membership is a one off payment of $25.00. To join, please download the membership Form. A number of year groups have a Year Coordinator who endeavours to bring together the students from their starting year.

The 2012 Annual Reunion Luncheon was held at the St George League's Club, Kogarah on 28 April. We met in The Grange for a delicious three-course meal, our thanks go to the Club and staff for being accommodating, friendly and efficient in every aspect of the day's festivities. Thank you! It was a pleasure to host Principal, Ms Knott and School Captain,  Lakshmi Logathassan. With pride we heard of the successes of St George girls not only in the academic field, but their sporting prowess, philanthropy and community spirit. This group of women to which we all belong proves that the culture and tradition of our school stay with us long after the final bell and the last exam.

As well as our honoured guests, 97 ex-students attended who amongst them covered a spread of school years from 1934 to 1997. Naturally, we had a chance to stand up once again and sing the school song. A stirring rendition, adding vitality and a renewed sense of comaraderie to the room. Oh yes, you can trust the jolly girls of St George!

Our raffle offered some very attractive prizes donated by both St Georgians and friends of the organisation. Gift vouchers, Breville electrical goods, fine wine and skillfully knitted toys amongst them. Raffle tickets raised almost $600. Memorabilia sales were also lucrative, with over $400 raised, and a portion of all reunion tickets add to our funds. The money we raise goes towards Speech Day prizes, along with regular donations to the school. Essentially every dollar raised eventually goes into SGGHS's coffers, to be used as needed to improve the experience of the girls of St George.

My personal special thanks go to the ladies of the committee (and friends!) who work tirelessly on the day to sell memorabilia, raffle tickets, and ensure everyone finds her friends. Much of my work is done in the lead up to the day, organising seating arrangements, printing name tags, and sending out tickets. My colleagues then take over for the day of the luncheon, and the Treasurer and her assistant are then faced with a busy Sunday tallying sales and balancing the books. I cannot say how grateful I am for the help these ladies give. Being a member of the committee for the last ten years has given me a rare opportunity to make true friends with many generations of ex-students, and I treasure these connections.
