St George Girls High School
An academically selective high school for girls
St George Girls High has had a Mothers’ Committee since the school began over 90 years ago.
Parents meet on the first Wednesday morning of each month from 10am – 12 noon. The Principal attends every meeting, and often another staff member, such as a Head Teacher, gives a presentation about an aspect of the school curriculum or other relevant topic. Guest speakers in the past included Head Teachers and a presentation on environmental initiatives at the school by Ms Duffy and girls from the Environment Committee.
The meetings are an excellent way to learn about the school and a valuable opportunity to ask questions of the Principal and Staff. They are held in an informal atmosphere and are a terrific way to get to know your daughter’s school.
As well as providing a forum for liaison between parents and the school, the Committee has a major fundraising function through the co-ordination of the Uniform Shop. The funds raised are used to purchase necessary equipment for the school. For example, in 2008 the Mothers’ Committee provided $50,000 which was used to upgrade the school’s technology infrastructure and in 2009 contributed nearly $12,000 to fund various faculty requests.
Additionally the Committee contributes to school life by organising the annual Mother-Daughter dinner, donating $1,620 towards Speech Day and Year 12 Graduation prizes, and providing representatives on staff selection and annual report review panels. The Mother’s Committee is a wonderful way to contribute to your daughter’s school life.
The Uniform Shop opens at Wednesday lunchtimes during school terms and for several special trading days during the year including Year 7 Orientation Day. Volunteers are rostered on to assist in the shop on Wednesdays and for these special days. The assistance of any parents who are able to able to volunteer on a regular or causal basis would be gratefully appreciated. The Uniform Shop Co-ordinator, Lana Winger, can be contacted via the school office.
Further information regarding the school uniform can be found at School Uniform with a full price list and list of opening days for the uniform shop.
Every year the Mothers’ Committee organises a very successful Mother-Daughter dinner on the eve of Mother’s Day. This is a lovely opportunity for the school community to celebrate the precious relationship of mothers and daughters. Tickets sell out quickly to this highly enjoyable evening
In the 1960’s the P&C was also formed and the two parents bodies work together to support our school. Both provide an opportunity for parents to be involved in the life of the school.
The P&C meets in the evening on the 4th Thursday of each month and raises money predominately through its direct giving appeal. The Mothers’ Committee provides an opportunity for those parents who are able to meet together in the daytime, and co-ordinates the Uniform Shop.
Our school is fortunate to be able to provide two different ways for parents to become involved in the school community. As well as increasing the opportunity for fundraising, which ultimately provides more resources for our daughters’ education, it is also true that when parents contribute to and feel part of the school our daughters benefit from a richer school life.
